Just so, if God weren't a part of their DNA, the new atheists would not write such sophomoric drivel. It's about God. It's who we are, and we can't help it.

Now, assuming you buy into what I just said, this God thing in us is not altogether different from hunger, sexual desire, or the drive for peace and security; only it's far bigger. If hunger can make you fat, sexual desire cause you to turn others into objects instead of people, and the desire for peace and security cause you to take peace and security from others, think what the desire for God will do. If we distort our lesser passions, how much more our passion for God?

The wolves know that! Someone has said that we southerners get away with saying anything, no matter how hurtful or critical, by prefacing what we say with "Bless your heart . . ." Well, Christians can lay on the guilt, rob the sheep of their freedom, send them on a crusade to impact the world, and "turn the tide for God," all with a prophetic "Thus says the Lord." That's why, when new Christians come into the church, we put saddles on them and ride them until they die. And the great tragedy is that our neurotic DNA makes us think we're doing it for him.
