It really is amazing how many Christians from very different backgrounds have come to correctly understand that the real meaning of Sabbath rest is found only in Christ, not a day. Pastor Stedman's sermons were a source of great learning for me while I was still in SDAism.

Thanks Rick, I'll check it out. I'm always looking to hear good sermons on the Sabbath. That's the one issue I'm working on with my Mom.

That link only has the written sermon. I found another link that has both the written and an audio version.

Amen Rick,

I have been very fortunate. When I left Adventism and eventually joined an evangelical fellowship Ray C. Stedman was a frequent visiting preacher. His in person preaching was even better than his many written and recorded messages because he lived the way he preached.

His idea of church government, for instance, was a total opposite of what we all lived with in Adventism. His fellowship was administered by a board of elders. And, the elders would never reach a decision without 100 percent agreement. He personally testified that many times 'the still small voice' of the Holy Spirit was speaking to only one person and the board as a whole would ‘wait upon the Lord’ to make his will known. Stedman did not chair or rule this board. He was a servant, not a ruler.

Although a well educated theologian and full of wisdom, he was a preacher that I, new to good bible centered preaching, could easily talk to.

Thank you for sharing that Phil. Having never met the man, having never heard anything about him, I was moved by the clarity of the Gospel in his messages. I spent entire days simply reading through his sermon library. Hearing about how he was as a person only makes the messages more powerful.

Quote: The reason why you cannot enter into the joy and glory and excitement of the rest which God has provided in ceasing from your own activities and resting upon his, is because, in some way or another, you are protecting some area of the ego, the self-life, saying, "This is mine; keep your hands off." As long as you do that you cannot have rest. (Stedman)

Boy does that ever speak to the years I couldn't find rest, when the Lord began to try and make inroads into my life to bring me to a place that I could rest, I just couldn't give up, I'd say, you can have that over there, but you can't have this, this is mine.

I thought that if I gave him all, I would lose my own identity of who I was as a person, but instead, when he brought me to a place of throwing myself entirely on him, I found out that I was still me, only now there was potential, I didn't have to do everything by myself.

Resting in him is beyond belief of anything I could ever have imagined. Life doesn't blow me over like it used to. Its true I get floored every once in a while, but I'm no longer working in my own power and going on my on steam.

Its like those little men in a carnival you knock over with a base ball, you knock a little man down and the carnie pulls a lever and set'em right back up.

Jesus is pulling the levers and sits me right back up. Leaning back in Jesus rest for 2 minutes is like a week of week ends.

I listened to some of his stuff and he is undoubtedly a good teacher, yet when he comes to preach on first Corinthians chapter 14, he ends up making a complete ass out of himself before God.

Much of what he said on the chapter is right on, and yet it is obvious he is not qualified to speak on the subject of tongues at all.

How does this happen that a man of God can be so wrong? Well...we none of us have it all down pat, signed, sealed and delivered.

That is why we need to be able to examine any ministers words in light of the word of God and what we ourselves know instead of being crowd followers and just because a preacher has a good reputation is no sign he is going to be right on everything he speaks about, and we have end up swallowing every word that comes out of his mouth as gospel facts.

Does the fact that he was so wrong in much of that sermon mean we can't learn from him? Not at all, but we need to be able to sift out the wheat from the chafe and you can't do it with a closed bible in your hand and an amen hanging on every word he speaks.

He gives a fairly accurate description on the context of 1 Cor; 14, then ends up chucking the whole thing out! Can you say 'closet secessionist?

The former Adventist has a great advantage over life time evangelicals in the fact that they get to start out with a clean slate, whereas lifetime evangelicals take for granted what they have been taught as the way it really is.

The biggest eye opener for me was when I started working with Adventist I was forced to take a second look at everything being taught and I ended up with no hero's.
I used to have preacher hero's, but not any more.

We need to all be those more noble and be prepared to receive the word of God and search the scriptures daily to see if these things be so and we also need to be prepared to hold in tension things we are unsure of until we become more qualified. Its not a shame to be unqualified, but is is a shame when we think we are qualified on every angle in the bible.

preachers many times mess up a perfectly good sermon by adding their own convictions to the sermon instead of letting the Bible speak.

River,
I think it just proves that we all have our blind spots. Even great preachers of the Word.

The trouble with us lifetime evangelicals is that we are lifetime evangelicals. :-)

River, your "preacher hero" comment got a chuckle from me, because that is so huge with SDAs.

They swarm Clifford Goldstein like moths to a porchlight. I guess it's because he converted from Judaism, and because he is such a raging investigative judgment apologist. Then there is Doug Batchelor...

I never understood the whole phenomenon, because it seems they won't take their own advice. When someone leaves the SDA church, members often say it's because the former "was focused on people in the church, rather than on the truth." Meanwhile, they hold up converts from other denominations or religions as evidence of their "truth."

It seems I have read of a female Methodist minister in MD who was converted to adventism and as I remember they were trying to get all the congregation. It was something of which the sdas were very proud.

Skeeter; from what I remember, Doug B. was given at least one Adventist book, so he didn't get believing in the Sabbath from the Bible. He got it from the SDA twistings.... Otherwise he would have understood that Jesus is what the Sabbath shadow pointed forward to!

Yep ! :-) There is NO WAY anyone will be convinced Adventism is truth by using only the Bible. Just repeatin what I heard through the grapevine. :-)
It has always amazed me though how a druggie who wandered naked in the desert, supposedly was from a wealthy family (never hear anything about THEM)and lived in a cave and ate out of dumpsters.... could so quickly rise through the ranks of a denomination. I am sure SDA's believe it was with God's help... I believe it was not God, but another spirit that helped him along.
