With the beginning of Hanukkah, I tend to remember my early studies of SDA, the IJ and reading about the true meaning behind Daniel 8:14 (the pillar of SDA, if you will). Knowing that their so-called "pillar" is the Hanukkah story, I tend to wonder how Adventists reconcile the events and meaning of the holiday with history. What I mean is, if Daniel 8:14 is "allegedly" the IJ, what is Hanukkah? The only conclusions I can come up with are either 1) they story would have to be false (especially in light of the record being found in an apocryphal text) or 2) the biblical record/allegory is found elsewhere. So I pose this question to you true formers (for those new here, I never was SDA; my wife was and I studied and came to my conclusions independently). What do you recall hearing about Hanukkah as an Adventist? Did the church do or say anything to discredit it? Are they now? I'm quite curious. |

I do not remember anything about Hannukah being mentioned growing up sda. On CARM when it is mentioned the sdas just blow it off or ignore it. Diana |

Jlondon81~ I was born into a 4Th generation adventist family~ I NEVER heard or was taught anything about Hanukkah Furthermore, in the church I attended from birth till age 18, the Jews were, for the most part held up to scorn. Sad but true~ ~mj~ |

I brought the history of Hanukkah up to my SDA father-in-law and he looked at me like I was speaking martian. Didn't mean a thing to him at all. The other side of the coin is that Jesus is recorded as having been at the temple during the festival (of lights, which was Hanukkah then too) "as was his custom". If Jesus's actions are truly the example SDA's say they are (hello Sabbath), they would be observing Hanukkah just as He did. Leigh Anne |

This is relevent scripture that involves Jesus, and Hanukkah, John 10: 22 And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. 23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch. The feast of dedication was, what is now referred to as Hanukah. Scripture does not indicate whether or not Jesus kept Hanukah, just that he was present in the temple during this time. Sabbath keepers will state that Paul kept the sabbath on account that he presented himself at the synagogue, to teach on the sabbath. So applying that logic it could be said that Jesus was a Hanukah keeper because he taught in the temple during this winter festival. I do not apply this logic in either of these two cases, but do feel the mention of the feast of dedication was not mentioned just to make an essay assignment a certain number of words in length, as if instructed to do so by a college Greek class instructor. 2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: The feast of dedication marks the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration by the forces of the King of Syria Antiochus IV Epiphanes. The Temple in Jerusalem was looted and the services stopped, Antiochus ordered an altar to Zeus erected in the Temple. He banned circumcision and ordered pigs to be sacrificed at the altar of the temple. This put quite a dent in the sacrificial system of that time. This event is historically covered in the books of Maccabees, and by Josephus , but also prophetically covered in the book of Daniel as the cleansing of the sanctuary. Joel, good question. I heard about Hannukah, but I didn't really know what it was. Those Jewish historical events were were so over...I mean, the Jews have been replaced because they rejected Jesus...right? It's only after realizing that Adventism was false that I came to understand what Hannukah was—and that I have come to see that God keeps His promises, even to the Jews. What He says, He will do...if that is not true, we can't trust Him to keep His promises to us, either. Colleen |

One of my favorite quotations is behind the Channuka story. "Victory comes not from the size of our army, but from the strength of our faith" - Judah Maccabee 1 Macc 3:19. Its not a Christian holiday, but it does put to rest the Adventist interpretation of the Cleansing of the Sanctuary and its a great story of faith and promises kept. |

Maryroses, welcome back. I wish this did put to rest the adventist interpretation of the cleansing of the sanctuary. It has been talked about on CARM and the adventists there just do not want to believe it. Diana |

About two years into my stay in Seventh-day Adventism, I remember buying a Hanukkah card for my Jewish friend. One card had the story of the festival of lights. I was absolutely shocked to read that Hanukkah was celebrated by Jews as fulfillment of the prophecy I had been studying in Sabbath school as something completely different. I had just read in the Bible that day (or close to it) about Jesus observing the festival of lights in the gospel of John. I bought two of the cards - one for my friend and one to take to church. I showed the elders the card and asked why Jesus seemed to have celebrated the festival of lights as fulfillment of the prophecy in Daniel. Since (of course) if didn't agree with the stuff they were teaching, the dimissed it and warned me to stay away from the teachings and traditions of Babylon. Incidentally, there's a great article about Hanukkah here: http://truthorfables.com/Hanukkah.htm Enjoy! |
