Jesus + Diet = Salvation “As our first parents lost Eden through the indulgence of appetite, our only hope of regaining Eden is through the firm denial of appetite and passion. Abstemiousness in diet, and control of all the passions, will preserve the intellect and give mental and moral vigor, enabling men to bring all their propensities under the control of the higher powers, and to discern between right and wrong, the sacred and the common”. (59.1) “As Adam fell through appetite, and lost blissful Eden, the children of Adam may, through Christ, overcome appetite, and through temperance in all things regain Eden”. (70.1) The Vegan Diet Prescription “Grains, fruits, nuts, and vegetables constitute the diet chosen for us by our Creator. These foods, prepared in as simple and natural a manner as possible, are the most healthful and nourishing. They impart a strength, a power of endurance, and a vigor of intellect, that are not afforded by a more complex and stimulating diet”. (81.2) “God is working in behalf of His people. He does not desire them to be without resources. He is bringing them back to the diet originally given to man. Their diet is to consist of the foods made from the materials He has provided. The materials principally used in these foods will be fruits and grains and nuts, but various roots will also be used”. (81.5) Letter 3, 1884. “Let the diet reform be progressive. Let the people be taught how to prepare food without the use of milk or butter. Tell them that the time will soon come when there will be no safety in using eggs, milk, cream, or butter, because disease in animals is increasing in proportion to the increase of wickedness among men. The time is near when, because of the iniquity of the fallen race, the whole animal creation will groan under the diseases that curse our earth”. (349.1) “You place upon your tables butter, eggs, and meat, and your children partake of them. They are fed with the very things that will excite their animal passions, and then you come to meeting and ask God to bless and save your children. How high do your prayers go?” (245.3) A Modified Prescription? (??)“Some,in abstaining from milk, eggs, and butter, have failed to supply the system with proper nourishment, and as a consequence, have become weak and unable to work. Thus health reform is brought into disrepute. The work that we have tried to build up solidly is confused with strange things that God has not required, and the energies of the church are crippled”. (208.5) (??)“The time has not come to say that the use of milk and eggs should be wholly discarded.” (351.2) (It’s 2011 -surely the time has come by now? ) Finally Brethren, (??)“The question of using milk and butter and eggs will work out its own problem”. (359.1) (In other words, “You guys figure it out”). Note Although EGW never forbids outright the use of eggs and dairy, her suggestions that a) eggs stimulate the “lower passions”; b) that dairy products carry disease and prophesing that this will become more of a problem as time goes on and c) that the Edenic diet is the one God is bringing His people back to in preparation for heaven and d) that a strict, abstemious diet is essential for spiritual growth, provides adequate counsel for most sincere EGW adherents to adopt a vegan diet. If Ellen White (or others) should later suggest that people have gone to unneccessary extremes in diet, I would point them back to the source of the fanaticism– Ellen White’s original counsel (allegedly given by Jesus), counsel that was later left in question for the saints to figure out for themselves. There are many sincere historic adventist's who have been following this counsel strictly for years, who are today weak and unwell. |

My husband is going to visit a historic sda family this week who have been unwell for years. They cannot see that their extreme vegan diet is the problem. They believe they must fast to purge toxins (the 'toxins' are 'making them sick'). They said they 'felt impressed by the Holy Spirit' to fast. They have two more weeks of vegetable juice/soups fasting to go. This will not help! I quote here one example, one in many from my own experience. I don't care what the American Dietetic Assoc. says about the vegan diet. Maybe they need to update their research. Too much research is based on biological plausibility in a science lab and not enough in a real world (behavioural science) setting. Real people simply don't balance 3 meals a day with a restricted diet. Life gets in the way. |

Sigh...Oh, Kelleigh....I agree with you. EGW was not speaking for God. These were entirely worldly ideas that ignored the clear word of God. Physical health is so connected to spiritual health, and when people are drinking from a false gospel, they will suffer. Colleen |
