You know, another former was saying something and I all of a sudden realized how very important to each of us that we come to a full understanding of the new covenant.

It is critical that we understand it, because it helps us to grow into producing the fruits of the Spirit.

It helps us to have discernment about doctrine and avoid the pain of falling into another legalistic situation.

An understanding of the new covenant is foundational to our well being. Without that foundation we will flounder in pain, obscurity, and uncertainty.

You all can probably think of other ways it helps us, these are just quickly right of the top of my head.

One foundational building block that helped me with my covenant confusion was the reality that the Old Covenant (OC) and New Covenant (NC) are actually separate and distinct from one another and that the New Covenant is actually something "NEW" - not a reinterpretation of the OT Mosaic covenant made with Israel or an addition to that old covenant. Adventism goes to great lengths to place the NC along side the OC as if there is some equality between them.

Well, here's what one Spirit-inspired Bible author distinguishes as being a part of the first covenant. Some words that jumped out at me as I read these verses where: obsolete, old, vanish away, first covenant, tablets of the covenant.

quote:

Hebrews 8:13-9:5 In speaking of a new covenant, he [Jesus the Lord] makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away. Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness. For a tent was prepared, the first section, in which were the lampstand and the table and the bread of the Presence. It is called the Holy Place. Behind the second curtain was a second section called the Most Holy Place, having the golden altar of incense and the ark of the covenant covered on all sides with gold, in which was a golden urn holding the manna, and Aaron's staff that budded, and the tablets of the covenant. Above it were the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy seat. Of these things we cannot now speak in detail.

I was blown away when I saw that the first or old covenant included the "tablets of the covenant" and that Jesus made it all obsolete. Talk about planned obsolescence...

I am reading the OT now. As I read, I am now in Deuteronomy, I see, more and more, that the commandments, the laws and other regulations were only for the children of Israel, to set them apart as God's people. Everything pointed forward to Jesus Christ.

Nowhitehats,

You really made on good point, so I would like to appropiate what you said here on the commentary I am working on, day two of week seven quarterly lesson. I've studied Hebrews many times over and somehow missed the excellant point you just brought out.

Thanks,

Fearless Phil

Hebrews 9:11 But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come, by a greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not of this building;
Hebrews 9:12 Neither by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.
Hebrews 9:13 For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh:
Hebrews 9:14 How much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without spot to God, purge your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?

The old covenant had to be completely gone to make way for the new and eternal covenant.

The old covenant was temporary, the new covenant is eternal and forever.

Hebrews 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

Notice it says, 'they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

I also like the next few verses after the ones that River quoted:

"For where there is a testament, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator. For a testament is in force after men are dead, since it has no power at all while the testator lives." Hebrews 9:16,17 (That will and testament is the New Covenant that Jesus brought in by His death.)

Adventism looks backward to the law, while Christianity looks forward to the resurrection of our bodies.

Adventism looks backward to the flesh, while Christianity looks forward to life in the Spirit both now and in the time to come.

Adventism is not Christian in any shape or form, they would like to have us believe that it is, but the Spirit does not bear witness to it and neither does the word.
