I read a Trumphet Magazine published by the Armstrong church affiliate. They were discussing the soul question and to my surprise, they do not believe in an imortal soul either. Using the same texts as the SDA to support the position. So , does that make them a cult too? I understand they were once sabatarians. I also noted they tend to perpetuate the 10C and other assorted OT teachings as binding on Christians. | ||

Have you watched the video Called to Be Free? It's the story of Herbert Armstrong and the Worldwide Church of God. You can watch it at www.exadventist.com. Go to the video section and scroll down. This is an amazing video that I've watched several times. It's the story about truth coming to a cult. I cry every time I watch it. God did such a miracle with those people. I pray God will do the same for Adventists. I fear He aleady has and the leaders rejected the truth for keeping the money, colleges, schools, pensions and hospitals. | ||

If I am not mistaken the Trumpet Magazine is published by one of the groups that held on to the old beliefs of the Worldwide Church of God. If that is the case, then it would be like what the people in the video Joyfullheart left not what they went into. What made Armstrongism a cult: Belief in a modern prophet/apostle with a special message for today Denial of the Trinity Salvation based on obedience to laws (including dietary laws) rather than by grace alone though faith alone Proclaiming that the Gospel was the message of a future Kingdom of God rather than Christ and Him crucified. Teaching that we are not born again of the Spirit until the 2nd coming. Teaching a second chance after death for unbelevers to submit to God. | ||

Joyfulheart, Thank you for posting about the video story of the Worldwide Church of God. I remember where I was standing the day I heard that denomination had changed. It was a life moment for me because I wondered about my own denomination. . . I just watched the whole video & this sticks with me - that Jack Hayford & others with him used to do a prayer walk on the perimeter of the campus - & this change came about. A testimony to what prayer & the Holy Spirit can do. A denomination as an organization & institution can & did renounce false teachers & false teachings. All things are possible with God. With God, nothing is impossible! Almighty God! J9 | ||

Joyfulheart, I pray too that something like this would happen to the Adventists. I didn't know that Jack Hayford & others did a prayer perimeter around the WCG campus. I wish we could do that around the General Conference of SDAs in Maryland. | ||

Jim, I would really suggest that you get rid of all of this junk reading and focus on the genuine and the true. I believe that it is all of this error-filled garbage that you keep exposing yourself to, whether in books, or magazines, or TV shows, that leaves you with so much confusion. | ||

It's interesting that you mentioned Jack Hayford. I don't remember that part of the documentary, but must go back and watch it. We met Jack Hayford last month and Ben shared a little of his story with him and he didn't seem at all interested or that it "registered." He said something like "just be a blessing wherever God puts you." Like he was on automatic pilot... It's interesting that he has a history with sabbatarians and un-orthodox groups. | ||

You know Alison, after watching that documentary, I wished the same thing - that we could get together and prayer walk the perimeter of the SDA headquarters - or Andrews - or even the local SDA church. The woman who in the video wants to stand up and scream I'm here - It worked. Thanks for praying - or something like that moves me to tears everytime I watch it. Cloudwatcher, I think the WWCOG was known to be a cult. Many pastors seem to think Adventism is OK - just a little legalistic and quirky. I don't know if that's what he thinks or not. That might account for the difference in reaction. | ||

WWCOG was defintely a cult. My grandmother and father-in-law were both members and it's Armstrong's teachings via his dad that attracted my husband to the Hebrew Roots Movement. There are many splinter groups now that attempt to hold on to Armstrong's beliefs. Many who left landed in the Hebrew Roots Movement. We met many who came from that. I agree with the exhortation to immerse yourself in the WORD of God.. not men. I'm at a place right now where I have almost no time to read at all.. all my piles of books are sitting there staring at me, but the blessing is it narrows me down to just the Word and that has been really amazing. Everything else starts to look like fluff pretty soon and I look at all my books and wonder how many are really worth my time... when I ever have any again. | ||

Ric, I am not imersed in the Trumphet. I scan it, takes me about 15 minutes per issue and I toss it. It does contain some Christian news articles I do not see anywhere else. But as far as Theology goes, it is virtually SDA. Been there , done that. | ||

Jim, I am just worried for you. I know that you express your frustration and confusion here and I am searching for advice on how you can experience less of this. I'm sure you read and watch plenty of good stuff too, but we hear so much about the really bizarre stuff that I am concerned. My comments are not a judgment, but my advice. | ||

Cloudwatcher, about three or so years ago I saw an online broadcast of Jack Hayford giving a vesper program at the LLU Church. He spoke and sang and was all fraternal, assuming everyone there was an alive Christian. I realized that he has totally bought the idea that Adventists are Christian, and that the LLUC is, in particular. So I'm not surprised he didn't get onboard when Ben told him about your story.
