This article came in the mail to us this week (in a Development magazine put out by Southwestern Adventist University.)

***
Southwestern Adventist University is offering free tuition for four years to one selected Johnson County Eagle Scout. “We are looking for exemplary leaders,” says University President Eric Anderson. “Quite simply, we are impressed with the Scouting movement and its record of producing leaders.”
The scholarship is worth approximately $66,000. The winner must live in a University dormitory on the Keene campus of Southwestern.
Any Johnson County Eagle Scout who meets the following requirements is eligible to apply for this scholarship:
1. He must provide two appropriate recommendations (from a troop leader, teacher, pastor, or community leader).
2. He must have a cumulative high school grade point average of at least 3.0;
3.He must have SAT scores of at least 620 in critical reading and 640 in mathematics.
4.He must write an articulate and persuasive essay on “My Hero.”

*****
So, is this the new evangelism (once again disguised as community service)?

I can only pray for the unsuspecting high schooler who sees an opportunity to get a "free" education at the only University in his county.

He'll have to live in the dorm and therefore attend a required number of worships. Not to mention, he'll be sequestered in dorm life (away from his family and friends) where he'll be surrounded by Adventist peers that *seem* just like him, but really live in a parallel universe. I wonder what his reaction will be when he goes to the cafeteria and finds all the strange vegetarian counterfeits. His new friends will seem to be enjoying it and familiar with it. They don't raise an eyebrow! (Dare to be a Daniel, Eagle Scout!)

All his friends will be at the campus church on Saturday and he won't be allowed to sit in the student lounge and watch his favorite Friday night TV shows.

Then he'll be required to take at least 3 religion courses as part of his course load where he'll be taught the hows and whys of the culture he just entered.

When/if he finally realizes that this is WAY more than he bargained for, he'll have to make the hard choice of walking away from a $66,000 scholarship.

Eagle Scouts is not a Christian organization, so literally *any* unsuspecting young man could get caught in this net.

This is so sneaky and deceptive. It makes my blood boil.

And then, I suppose their hopes is that he will bring his family into the fold as well.... Oh, that poor unsuspecting boy :-(

Last I knew SDAs thought Boy Scouts was so bad that they needed to make a vege-scouting organization of their own.

If they were truly impressed by what Boy Scouts of America produces they would song their kids up in the organization.

Not to mention the fact that they will spend 66 grand to steal a sheep.

Cloudwatcher, that makes my blood boil, too. And notice they want talented, smart Eagle scouts who speak well and have high SATs.

Ellen said, after all,

quote:

God will accept the youth with their talent, and their wealth of affection, if they will consecrate themselves to Him.They may reach to the highest point of intellectual greatness; and if balanced by religious principle they can carry forward the work which Christ came from Heaven to accomplish, and in thus doing be co-workers with the Master" (Fundamentals of Christian Education, p. 48)

Once again...the gospel is all about the mental "faculties" enhanced, of course, by "religious principle"...

I have been reading this and have been wondering if there was some way we could warn the boyscouts in that area about that "scholarship". Is there some way the scout leaders or some one can be contacted to send the Rose publication to about adventism.
And yes, it makes my blood boil also!

Why don't they give scholarships to Master Guides then?!
