14Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. Titus 2:14 KJV

In the adventist world, this word "peculiar people" played out very nicely as we sought to be as peculiar as we could be :-) I know that nowadays the trend is for adventists to blend in with mainstream Christianity, but not when I was growing up!

I read this today in a book called The Magnificent Goodness of God and how it will transform your life, by Tim Rowe. He is quoting from "Word Studies in the Greek New Testament" about the true meaning of this word "peculiar". I thought it was very inspiring and different from what I had always thought...

"The word is translated from a Greek word which is made up of two words, one which means "around," as a circle, and the other which means "to be." It can be charted by a dot within a circle. This will help us understand the meaning of the combined word. As the circle is around the dot, so God is around each one of his saints. The circle monopolizes the dot, has the dot all to itself. So God has His own all to Himself. They are His own private, unique possession. He has reserved them for Himself."

Awesome huh?!

Even before I started questioning Adventism I was already aware that the KJV translation of "peculiar" in that place was a KJV peculiarity not found in other translations. What I was not aware of at the time is how much that impacts SDA doctrine.
