My favorite Christmas song is "O Come, O Come Emmanuel." I was singing it with my wife's SDA family during Christmas, and they were using the SDA hymnal, while I was singing the words from memory. After the first verse, I noticed that I was singing words that were different from their words, so I decided to research the differences. The online Lutheran Hymnal has the words I am used to hearing, the words that are used in most recordings. I found that, when comparing these words to the SDA version, the divinity and power of Christ are diminished in the SDA version. Compare: Note that in the Lutheran\Christian version, Jesus is referred to as He who "ordered all things mightily," a reference to His divine authorship of all creation. Jesus is referred to as the one true creator God. In the SDA version, Jesus is not referred to as one who has ordered all things, but rather He is asked to order things. He is simply a divinely-appointed janitor, not the one true creator God. Consider as well: In fairness, I have heard the second stanza of this verse rendered either way, but the last stanza is the point. In the Christian version, Jesus is referred to as the King of Peace, reflecting the fact that He is Almighty God and that He has conquered this world by His death and resurrection. In the SDA version, He is simply asked to bring Heaven's peace, not to BE Divine Peace Himself. The SDA Jesus is a false Jesus. He is no Jesus at all! | ||

The SDA Jesus had to wait until 1844 to enter the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary. What a weakling! My Jesus is the Alpha and the Omega and has always had full access to the Holy of Holies, because He is the Holy One! | ||

It surprises me that Ellen White had the audacity to suggest that Jesus WAITED until 1844, when Hebrews clearly says He went already. I guess she figured that a lot of people wouldn't read their Bibles and see that, or that people would be the way I was when I was an Adventist - blindly following along and believing - figuring that anything I "didn't understand" in the Bible was explained somewhere by Ellen White. When someone is really searching though, they can see it. Hebrews 6:19,20 clearly says that and Hebrews 9:25 compares Jesus offering Himself as a sacrifice to the high priest entering the Most Holy Place EVERY YEAR. And then there is the fact that the holiest place in Heaven would have to be where God is. Jesus sat down at the right hand of God. (Hebrews 1:3 and Hebrews 10:12) | ||

1 Cor 1:18-31 talks of the Wisdom of God. v24 "But to those called by God to salvation, both Jews & Gentiles, Christ is the mighty power of God and the wonderful wisdom of God." v30 "God alone made it possible for you to be in Christ Jesus. For our benefit God made Christ to be wisdom itself. He is the one who made us acceptable to God. He made us pure and holy, and he gave himself to purchase our freedom." It gives me chills to see how subtle yet shocking is the denial of Christ in SDAism. I don't see any way to explain changing the wording in that hymn except an evil denial of Christ Jesus. Read the whole context. It's all about Jesus. He does it all. J9 | ||

Bskillet, amazing. Yet another hymn subtly gutted by Adventist theology. I've never seen this contrast before. In fact, I originally learned the Adventist version, and I don't remember pondering the differences before. You're right...the Adventist Jesus is NOT the Almighty God, the King of Peace Himself. He is instead the way-shower (not the Way), and as you said, he's the envoy of God. You are right; the Adventist Jesus is a false Jesus. Today at lunch we were discussing some Scripture passages, and Proverbs 21:1 came up:
One among us said, "So it's literally true that Jesus IS the King of kings...that's not just a metaphor for the king with the most power. He rules over kings." It's amazing to me how much I learned to "spiritualize" or "metaphor-ize" in Adventism. Those things could not be literally true... The Lord Jesus is Sovereign; He truly is Lord over all! Colleen |
