I was reading Romans today and I had to hit the brakes and back up. Mind you I was reading up to this verse so I read it in the CONTEXT that Paul wrote it (that means no proof texting-my SDA friends)

My NLT Romans 10:4 says--
4 For Christ has already accomplished the purpose for which the law was given.[a] As a result, all who believe in him are made right with God.

The NASB says --
4For (A)Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to (B)everyone who believes.

The ESV says--
4For(A) Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.[a]

I wanted to see the greek words used for "law" and what was used to communicate the notion "the end of or accomplished"

Of course law was nomos [G3551]
the end of or accomplished was translated from "telos" [G5056]

From The Blue letter Bible I read "telos" is a noun (thing) to mean--

http://www.blueletterbible.org/lang/lexicon/lexicon.cfm?Strongs=G5056&t=NASB

1) end
a) termination, the limit at which a thing ceases to be (always of the end of some act or state, but not of the end of a period of time)

b) the end
i. the last in any succession or series
ii. eternal

c) that by which a thing is finished, its close, issue

d) the end to which all things relate, the aim, purpose

The other texts use telos to communicate meaning of an final end or completeness.

This completeness that ends the need to keep the law as a way of being right with God, did I miss this concept all this time! My other fSDAs what did you see or understand when you first read this verse and then again later as a Christian?

Thanks,
Ben

I don't remember what I thought of it as an Adventist; it sort of blurred into the background noise of "metaphor" or "part of the story".

I know that now this text is stunning, a literal statement of reality. And God asks me to live in reality, not in a world of my own creatiing.

For me, Romans 10:4 and other verses that are now so plain were just a "blur", I would read the words but they were just words. I know now that my mind was truly blinded, I couldn't understand it because of the blindness. I thank God everyday that now I see!!

I don't remember what I thought when I saw that text, but I have talked to some Adventists since I left and they stated that they believe the verse means that people aren't saved by the law anymore. In other words they believe we are saved by believing in Jesus and then keeping the law rather than saved by keeping the law alone.
