This is an invitation to help me in a research project. Some of you may have been part of the SDA splinter group of the 1960s through the late 80s, called the "Awakeners," led by Robert D. Brinsmead. He became quite a headache for the SDA church administration, and had a following that grew throughout those decades and peaked in the early 80's. Initially teaching perfectionism, He later became a proponent of Reformation theology and edited "Verdict" magazine. He both collaborated with, and debated Desmond Ford. Later in the 1980s, he embraced liberal theology, and finally, he gave up on the primary doctrines of the NT, including scriptural authority, Christ's atonement, resurrection, etc. The Awakeners scattered, and many became agnostic. Despite Brinsmead's abandonment of Adventism and the Christian faith, his influence still reverberates through the SDA church. I was on the inside of the Awakening, and I am gathering material for an article in Proclamation, so I would love to hear from any of you who were involved in this movement, either inside as followers, or outside as critics. Even though this project has personally been really "diggin' up bones," I believe we can help many of those who were left wounded and cynical in matters of faith. Martin, what a great idea to poll the forum members! I was not part of the movement—my parents were true believers—but his name has echoed in my head from as far back as I can remember. I'm eager to see what responses you get! Colleen |
