Last night my 9 year old niece spent the night. When my 8 year old said something about watching TV my niece said "Oh, we can't do that its the sabbath" My daughter replied with "we don't do the sabbath" then my niece said back "the sabbath is for everyone". I just smiled at my daughter and told her its ok and out of respect for my niece we would just leave the TV off. How do I handle this when we use to keep the sabbath, and they love not having to keep it anymore, but when relatives are around it is hard. Has anyone else gone through this? |

Hi Violet, I think it was handled perfectly;-)) The respect shown to your niece was more of a sermon than a night of study attempting to prove your point. My SDA friends understand that I am no longer an SDA. They know that I work on the Sabbath, shop, cook, travel, play, etc etc, yet when I visit them in their homes, I wont flaunt my "Sabbath breaking" to them in the same way that I would not try to force or sneak meat in their meal. When they visit me, I try to accommodate an atmosphere that we both are comfortable with. Maryann |

Violet: I think you handled it beautifully. One additional thought I would add (and these always seem to come after the moment) is to see it as an opportunity to plant the seed of the larger truth and say, "Jesus is our Sabbath Rest now." She probably won't understand, but the seed will be there. Onesimus |

Maryann, Do you actually mean? " I wont flaunt my "Sabbath breaking" to them" (I adlib a bit) "as long as they don't flaunt there "Sabbath breaking" to me". :-) |
